The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and a second season already in development—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction

One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates surrounding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.

“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Will the creator See the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
