The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a pivotal European match against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his debut.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his age and experience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.

According to international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.

He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the win at Manchester.
