The Gory Cartoon Film Conclusion That Lingers Audiences
Among all the mature animated films I’ve personally viewed, nothing has lingered in my mind as much as the terror-laced conclusion of the graphically gory and deeply subversive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, this Spain-based filmmaker crafted a dark, melancholy , often savage world with several minor , desolate hints of optimism.
Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from a desire to push animation further, the filmmaker explained that it was rather an attempt to express a widespread, cross-cultural message concerning “the common origin of every conflict.”
That message is conveyed via a band of brightly hued teddy bears , openly inspired by a well-known line of lovable figures.
Growing up in a community focused on warmongering as well as the defense industry, many of the bears are obsessed with exterminating unicorns, thanks to a religious scripture that tells the bears they were once masters of the woods, until these creatures forced them out.
A few have not completely accepted the indoctrination, and prefer to sample substances or fornicate outdoors.
Unlike their friendly counterparts, these bright beings display genitals , obvious libidos.
For a certain particularly cruel, cynical bear, Bluey, the conflict with the unicorns becomes a route toward dominance — and especially to dominance over his gentler, more compassionate sibling Tubby.
This bear acts as a tormentor and an obvious sociopath , and when horror dominates his group and kills his comrades one by one, he grabs progressively influence on his own behalf, in increasingly gory, harmful methods.
Simultaneously, these mythical beings are enduring their own nightmare, as a growing, harmful creature in their forest.
“Initially, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the director stated. “But then it turns into a more intense and melancholic film. And ultimately, it’s a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like among the playful movies from a legendary filmmaker, which find a mischievous joy in permitting cartoon characters curse, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Subsequently it evolves into something more like a darker film from that director, with increasingly explicit brutality and a tangible relation to the real horror of battle.
Ultimately, it is an outright extreme drama carnage.
The terror that turns this an ideal spooky-season watch starts a lot earlier than that description suggests.
Unicorn Wars is one for the most dedicated fans of gore, for enthusiasts of graphic films who want to watch a film they haven’t ever seen on-screen before, and can endure a narrative which delivers unflinching brutality.
Watch it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and that ending will crawl under your skin and take up residence there.
