Senegal's Emerging Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Year and Continental Arrival

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and earning player of the tournament.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits he must to temper his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. He is frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
