Reece Walsh Takes Center Stage as Dominant The Kangaroos Sweep England Aside in Opening Ashes Test
The home side's offensive weaknesses were laid bare and capitalized on by a clinical Australian side as the tourists swept to a surprisingly comfortable win in the opening Test of the Ashes.
The England coach's side had spoken effusively about their drive going into the first Ashes for over two decades, and they were certainly not short on endeavour at the famous stadium. However, in the crucial moments, it was the world champions who displayed more calmness in front of a record attendance for an Ashes Test in the United Kingdom of over sixty thousand spectators.
Outstanding Performance from Walsh
Guided by an outstanding showing in attack and defence from club star Reece Walsh, Australia were worthy and comfortable winners in the first match of the three-game contest, meaning England must triumph at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium next weekend to keep alive their aspirations of a series victory since the 1970s.
England will have to be much better with the possession if they are to accomplish that goal. On several instances in the opening period, the home team found themselves in advantageous situations but they were unable to cross for any tries. That was in large measure thanks to Reece Walsh, who executed two wonderful turnovers.
Key Moments of the Game
The first occurred as Farnworth seemed destined to put Young in for what would have been the opening try, then Walsh denied Mikey Lewis as the break approached. By then, the Australians had taken the lead as Walsh himself finished a wonderful move.
Nathan Cleary added the extras before kicking a two-pointer on the stroke of the interval to open up a two-score lead. It was a pivotal moment, as was the score for Angus Crichton shortly after the resumption which made it 14-0 in favor of the visitors. England now had to score three times and that seemed to stifle their momentum.
Should there have been uncertainty about the victors, they were firmly put to bed with a quarter-hour to go. Cameron Munster’s half-break was supported by Crichton, who pushed past Welsby for Australia’s third try.
That made it twenty to zero and there was added disappointment in the final minutes as Walsh completed another scintillating move, taking advantage of a weary and clearly exhausted English defense for his second.
Final Score and Outlook
By then, local supporters had begun to leave early and many did not see Clark's consolation, which at least avoided England finishing scoreless. Nonetheless, there are many issues for the coach to address going into what is now a must-win match next weekend.
