Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.

Departure from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be building momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
