Israelis have come together around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel responded by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership postponed official remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the agreement.

A high-ranking delegate involved in the discussions said that an late session of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.

The representative stated the morning session finished without tangible results, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the deal.

He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to narrow the disparities between the both parties.

Key Matters in Discussions

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies provision
  • After-conflict governance of the region

Civilian Reaction

In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the assault on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No place seems like home any longer and until each abducted person come back none of us will be secure."

"When we see all home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.

Near the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the abducted to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Surveys now consistently show that about the majority of the population desire the conflict to conclude in return for the freedom of the abducted.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the area of the music event, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli attacks persisted.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side district of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"As the night arrives, the fear appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.

"We are afraid of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, especially my little child who places his head on me all night."

"Every second we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city indicated additional dead people had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get help to the southern area, health workers stated.
